It's been a week since I've been away from Calcutta and the work load has been immense. I have a great team at work, a lovely set of colleagues and manageable client; apparently everything is falling in place. But then there's a hidden sense of incompleteness that's bothering me for a while now. And as they say...whenever in doubt, go back to the roots- let's look back and pick up some of those vibrant memories from the city that I left behind.
Calcutta memories: There's this jovial rickshaw-walah who smiled at me every time I walked past him, I often wondered what could be the reason...Never got a chance to ask him though. I have often seen him arguing with customers, negotiating with the rates but he never did the same with me. I rarely avail hand-pulled rickshaws as a mode of transport; on one hand, I feel it's slightly inhuman, but then on the other hand there's the idea of dignity of labour. You got to respect each and every profession, irrespective of the 'scope' of work. And this man, irrespective of the heat or rain, has been never absent from work. Most importantly, whatever he does, he does it with a smile on his face. How many of us really enjoy what we do for living? I guess the number would be very very less. Infinitesimal would be perhaps the right word...But then there are these "inconsequent entities" who enjoy each and every moment of their existence. - I haven't explored Delhi so far, but I guess, this my friend, is an unique feature of the City of Joy. My City of Joy. Missing you Calcutta. I will be back real soon.
